The tropical cyclone started as a tropical wave off the coast of Jalisco state in Mexico on Sunday. “If that wind arrives before the rain - which appears possible - amid very hot and dry conditions, that could actually result in a burst of extreme fire weather conditions right before the rain arrives,” said Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at UCLA and The Nature Conservancy. The winds, while not directly because of Kay, could cause additional problems. Wind gusts up to 45 mph will be possible Friday and Saturday in the city limits of San Diego, potentially causing wind damages in parts of the city. Gusts are expected to clock in between 35 to 55 mph in the mountains and passes of San Diego and San Bernardino Counties Friday. Some of these wetting rains - one tenth of an inch or greater - are aiding firefighting operations on the blaze, but they will also come with strong tropical-storm force winds. Residents reported such strong winds kicked up ash and soot, traveling miles from the Fairview Fire, burning in Riverside County. In Laguna Niguel gusts of winds blew nearly 50 mph. In some areas rain fell as temperatures hovered around 100 degrees, conditions rarely seen in California. Orange and Los Angeles County residents were experiencing hot, humid, windy and rainy weather. These dangerous conditions will persist trhough at least 6:30 p.m. The community of Ocotillio is experiencing flash floods, where desert soils are not equipped to absorb intense rain. Friday and extends through Saturday, along with cities like Palmdale, Victorville and Palm Springs.įurther south, low-lying desert areas in southeastern San Diego County and along I-8, between Pine Valley and Boulevard, are also at risk and under a flash flood warning. Sequoia and Death Valley National Parks are included in the advisory, which goes into effect 11 p.m. The National Weather Service San Diego issued a Flash Flood Watch for large swaths of Central and Southern California.
